About

"Healing is an inside job." - B.J. Palmer

My name is Maria Nunley and I am licensed through the Department of Public Health (in Ct) as a Professional Counselor and as an Addictions Counselor. I have been working in the field of psychotherapy and counseling for over a decade. I started as a young adult, motivated by trying to answer my own question "what effects my behavior and the choices I make?" I found school boring and anxiety provoking, so I dropped out of high school and started working instead. I fell in love with working at a local inpatient unit for individuals struggling to cope with symptoms of clinical mental health diagnosis. I began as a Counselor's Aide and I would clean toilets and sweep the floors at night. I sat with clients and realized that they were doing the best they could - attempting to defuse the discomfort of day to day life utilizing limited coping skills. Their stories were filled with pain and trauma, and emotions were scary. The depth of our emotions, and our need for supportive relationships, characterizes us as human. However, that does not mean that sitting with, exploring and coping with emotions is easy. Emotions can be challenging. The more I learned about the root causes for the pain of others, the more I desired to learn about treatment modalities that would increase insight, self compassion, and motivate change. I eventually went back to school, earning a Master's in CJ with a concentration in Forensic Psychology from UNH and a Sixth Year Certificate in Clinical Mental Health from UB. I take additional trainings each year on ethics, culture, and a variety of treatment modalities to keep myself up to date on evidence based treatment approaches. I use motivational interviewing as a counseling method to explore goals with my clients, in combination with the use of Cognitive Behavior based modalities to explore how thoughts effect our behaviors, mood, self-esteem and our relationships with others. I am also trained in EMDR and utilize computer software to be able to conduct EMDR online and I use a light bar for in person sessions to conduct this therapy. As you reach out for a free consultation, we can discussed additional treatment approaches based on the questions that you may have for me. Healing is a great work that starts from the inside out and I am honored that you would choose to share your story with me. Thank you for including me in your path towards healing and progress.
